2009 One Book, One Boulder County selection announced
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
The 2009 One Book, One Boulder County book selection is Bridge to Terabithia, Katherine Paterson's classic 1977 children's novel. The book, about two children who create a magical forest kingdom, won the 1978 Newbery Medal, the most prestigious award for children's literature.
"The 2009 One Book, One Boulder County selection, Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson, is a Newbery Award winning book that brings together families and readers from all segments of the county," said Boulder Mayor Matt Appelbaum. "It is a moving exploration of the power of imagination and a terrific example of why books matter: it's way better than the movie! We are pleased to be in our fourth year of offering this community reading program and hope you enjoy reading or re-reading this timeless book. Join your neighbors for One Book community events, talks and programs throughout April, including a free talk by Katherine Paterson at Macky on May 1."
Several public library systems in Boulder County will host the 2009 One Book, One Boulder County program, along with the Boulder Valley School District and the University of Colorado (CU). This reading and discussion program encourages residents to read the same book at the same time to create a county-wide book club. For the project's culminating programs, author Katherine Paterson will visit Boulder on April 30 and May 1 for public speaking events on the CU campus.
Bridge to Terabithia is a book about two lonely children who create a magical forest kingdom. Paterson drew inspiration for the novel from a real event that occurred in August 1974, when a friend of her son was struck by lightning at a beach and died. In "Bridge to Terabithia," Jesse befriends a new neighbor, Leslie, after he loses a footrace to her at school. Through his friendship with Leslie, and his ultimate tragic loss of her, Jesse is transformed. He becomes courageous and lets go of the anger and frustration that had plagued him before knowing her.
A classic of children's literature, the book is studied in English classes around the world. A 1986 TV movie was produced by PBS. A theatrical film version, by Disney and Walden Media, was released in 2007. A free screening of this film will be introduced by Denver actress AnnaSophia Robb, who played the role of Leslie, at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 3, in the Main Boulder Public Library’s Canyon Theater, 1000 Canyon Blvd.
All community members are invited to join neighbors and friends for book discussions and special events presented during the month of April. While One Book, One Boulder County culminates with Paterson's visit, there will be numerous opportunities to discuss the book in libraries, bookstores, on the CU campus and in Boulder Valley schools.
A complete list of programs will be available by March 1. With the exception of a dinner welcoming Katherine Paterson to Boulder on April 30, all programs are free, thanks to a generous grant from the Boulder Public Library Foundation. Paterson will appear at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1 in Macky Auditorium on the CU campus.
